Operating the GBC PB2600 Electric Comb Binding Opener for Comb Binding

If multiple books of the same size are to be bound, GBC’s exclusive Binding Opening Control Knob will save time by enabling the finger opening to be preset so the comb binding is opened to the same location each time. Presetting this control limits the opening of the comb binding element to where the binding machine operator would want it for a particular size, while allowing the binding machine operator to job the comb binding elements open and closed for additional control. To avoid over stretching the comb binding element, set the comb binding element position only as far as needed to comfortably assemble the document with the binding machine. For this exercise, let’s assume a ” diameter comb binding is being used:

1. Place the Plastic Comb Binding element – open side up – onto the Vertical Holding Fingers.
2. Set the Binding Opening Control Knob to the LED light that corresponds with the element size.
3. Press the Table Binding Switch once on the binding machine to open the element, noting how far the spreading hooks move the comb binding element. If the amount of spread is too small to allow insertion of the document, gradually increase the setting until the proper opening is attained. Do not open the comb binding element more than necessary. This will stretch the element out of shape.
4. Pick up the punched document, front cover facing you, and jog it on a flat surface to align the pages. Hold the document in a vertical position, and insert the document onto the open fingers of the binding machine. The document should be standing upright. Grasp the bottom sides of the document with the tips of your thumb, forefinger and index finger of both hands, and move the sheets sideways so that the tips of the binding element on the binding machine are aligned with the holes. Move the document upward, allowing the tips of the element to snap into the holes, as you gently bend the document backward. This snapping action is caused by the leverage created from the bending u-shaped profile of the sheets. Bring the tips of your fore and index fingers down to the lowest possible point along the binding edge of the sheets. Keep your fingers in front of the Vertical Holding Fingers, and pull forward and downward on the sheets. This will cause the sheets to flip over and on top of the binding machine unit. Close the comb binding element using the Foot Switch, and lift the completed document straight up to remove it.

When binding larger documents, once they are open, either the table or foot switch can be used with a tapping motion to incrementally close the comb binding element. This enables the binding machine operator to assemble part of the document, slightly close the element and assemble the balance of the document.

The alternate Foot Binding Switch is useful for large documents, as it leaves the operator’s hands free. To open the binding element, depress either end of the foot switch. To close the comb binding element, depress the foot switch at the same end.

One of the most fantastic features of the PB2600 is the “No-Flip” Spine Stoppers. Binding the oval plastic comb binding can be quite a task on systems that do not have the Spine Stoppers to prevent the element from curling over the Vertical Holding Fingers. These would be used on elements 1-1/4″ through 2″ to support the element. To use:

1. Place the Plastic comb binding element – open side up – onto the Vertical Holding Fingers.
2. Rotate the Spine Stoppers (the black support posts behind the Vertical Holding Fingers) so that they are against the binding machine element, providing support for the backbone.
3. Place the document on the opened fingers of the binding machine in increments that are easy for you to handle, and tap the element closed as you need more of the fingers exposed. The support posts will hold the element in place.
4. When finished with the large documents, rotate the Spine Stoppers out of the way for smaller elements to be used.

Adding or Deleting Pages:

1. Set the Binder Opening Control Knob to its smallest opening setting.
2. Place the document, front side down, on the binding machine system, allowing the Vertical Holding Fingers to enter the binding element backbone/rings (not the punched holes of the document).
3. Press the Table Binding Switch, and rotate the Binder Opening Control Knob gradually until the binding opens enough to add or delete.
4. Press the Table Binding Switch (or Foot Binding Switch) to close the document.
