SERIAL ATA – THE WAY TO GO

Serial ATA (also known as Serial Advanced Technology Attachment or SATA) is a bus interface of computer located between mass storage devices and host bus adaptors. Devices and serial ATA host-adapters communicate via a single seven-wire high-speed serial cable instead of a parallel bus that previous technologies employed.

In over 99% of shipped desktop PCs, serial ATA has replaced parallel ATA (PDF 3.64MB), thanks to industry leaders like Intel. With high-performance flash drives and mechanical hard drives transferring data at levels of speed beyond the scopes of previous-generation specifications, it becomes a reality that second-generation 3.0 Gbit/s SATA interfaces are now shipping in high volumes, and are abundant in solid state devices, disk drives, and both server chipsets and PC.

Serial ATA is a standard of IDE for connecting devices like hard drives and optical drives to the motherboard. Generally the term SATA refers to the types of connections and cables that follow this standard.

SATA cables come in thin, long and 7-pin form. One of the two ends plugs into the back of a storage device like a hard drive, and the other into a port located on the motherboard, labeled SATA in usual.
